Convert area and depth into bulk volume and practical order quantities for landscaping and groundwork

In this guide
  1. Area × depth
  2. Depth conversions
  3. Volume to mass
  4. Bags vs bulk
  5. Worked example
  6. Regional terminology

Area × depth

Most loose landscaping materials begin with volume: area multiplied by finished depth.

volume = area × depth

Depth conversions

Convert millimetres or inches to metres or feet before multiplying. A common error is entering 50 mm as 50 metres rather than 0.05 m.

Volume to mass

Tonnes or pounds require a bulk-density assumption. Density varies with material grading, moisture and compaction, so supplier conversion factors are preferable.

Bags vs bulk

For bagged products, divide by the stated bag yield and round up. For bulk deliveries, check minimum order increments and whether the supplier sells by mass or volume.

Worked example

30 m² × 0.05 m = 1.50 m³ finished volume. Convert to tonnes only using an appropriate density for the selected aggregate.

Regional terminology

BuildCalc supports the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa. The geometry is universal, but terminology, units, pack sizes and common product dimensions differ. Use the dimensions printed on the product you intend to buy rather than assuming a regional default is exact.

Names such as Type 1, road base, crusher run, MOT, topsoil grades and decorative aggregate categories are market-specific.
