Calculate net wall area
Start with gross wall area, then deduct doors and windows where appropriate. For multiple walls, calculate each face separately and add the net areas.
Unit dimensions matter
Bricks and blocks vary in size. Quantity calculations should use the effective face dimensions including the intended mortar joint, not a generic units-per-square-metre figure when accuracy matters.
Wall thickness and leaves
A cavity wall or multi-leaf construction requires separate consideration for each leaf. A simple face-area calculator does not automatically account for piers, returns, bond patterns or structural details.
Mortar
Mortar demand varies with unit size, joint thickness, wall type and workmanship. Treat generic coverage rates as estimates and use product or project information where available.
Waste
Cut units, breakage and matching batches justify an allowance. Complex bonds, corners and decorative work can increase cutting compared with a simple straight wall.
Regional dimensions
BuildCalc supports the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa. The geometry is universal, but terminology, units, pack sizes and common product dimensions differ. Use the dimensions printed on the product you intend to buy rather than assuming a regional default is exact.
Always enter the actual brick or block dimensions. Names such as standard, modular or common do not guarantee identical dimensions between markets.
