Deck area is only the start
Area gives a useful first check, but board quantity is controlled by board orientation, actual board width, gaps and available stock lengths. Two decks with the same area can need different numbers of boards.
Boards and gaps
Across the deck, use the combined module of board width plus selected gap. Along the deck, convert required linear length into available stock lengths and consider where joints can occur.
Joists
Joist count depends on the deck dimension perpendicular to the joists and the selected centre spacing. Edge members, doubled members, trimmers and structural design can add material beyond a simple spacing calculation.
Fasteners
Estimate fasteners from board-to-joist intersections multiplied by the number of fixings used at each intersection. Add an allowance for dropped, damaged or unusable fixings.

Regional considerations
BuildCalc supports the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa. The geometry is universal, but terminology, units, pack sizes and common product dimensions differ. Use the dimensions printed on the product you intend to buy rather than assuming a regional default is exact.
Decking terminology, timber dimensions, recommended spacing and exposure requirements vary. Follow the board and fixing manufacturer's installation guidance and obtain appropriate structural advice where required.
