Driveway Materials Guide

Estimate excavation, sub-base, gravel, asphalt or concrete quantities from area and layer depth

In this guide
  1. Measure the footprint
  2. Layer volumes
  3. Sub-base and compaction
  4. Surface course
  5. Worked example
  6. Drainage and region

Measure the footprint

Calculate the driveway area from actual dimensions, splitting tapered or irregular areas into sections.

Layer volumes

Each construction layer has its own area × compacted depth volume. Do not combine depths before checking whether materials have different density and compaction characteristics.

Sub-base and compaction

Delivered loose volume or mass can differ from compacted finished volume. Use supplier or specification factors for the selected material.

Surface course

Gravel, asphalt and concrete require different estimating methods and construction details. The calculator estimates quantity, not pavement design.

Worked example

A 50 m² driveway with 150 mm finished sub-base represents 7.5 m³ compacted sub-base before any loose-delivery conversion.

Drainage and region

BuildCalc supports the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa. The geometry is universal, but terminology, units, pack sizes and common product dimensions differ. Use the dimensions printed on the product you intend to buy rather than assuming a regional default is exact.

Driveway drainage, permeable-surface rules, excavation and loading requirements vary by site and jurisdiction.
