Insulation Quantity Guide

Estimate insulation rolls, batts or boards from net area and product coverage while checking application requirements

In this guide
  1. Measure the insulated area
  2. Rolls, batts and boards
  3. Waste
  4. Thermal performance
  5. Worked ordering approach
  6. Regional requirements

Measure the insulated area

Calculate the actual wall, floor or ceiling area to be insulated. For framed construction, cavity dimensions can matter more than gross area.

Rolls, batts and boards

Use the coverage or dimensions of the chosen product. Round up to whole packs and consider whether offcuts can be reused.

Waste

Regular repetitive bays can be efficient; awkward geometry and many penetrations increase waste.

Thermal performance

Quantity and thermal performance are different questions. Required R-value or U-value depends on the assembly, material and local requirements.

Worked ordering approach

Calculate net area, select the actual product coverage, add a justified waste allowance, divide by pack coverage and round up.

Regional requirements

BuildCalc supports the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa. The geometry is universal, but terminology, units, pack sizes and common product dimensions differ. Use the dimensions printed on the product you intend to buy rather than assuming a regional default is exact.

Building-energy requirements differ substantially. Use BuildCalc for quantities, then verify required thermal performance and installation details separately.

Use the related calculators

Use the calculator for your measurements, then return to this guide to check assumptions, allowances and ordering considerations.
