Measure surfaces, not floor area
For walls, calculate wall length × wall height for each wall and deduct openings when appropriate. Add ceiling area separately. Floor area alone does not tell you how much board is required.
Choose sheet size and orientation
Sheet count based purely on total area is a minimum. Orientation, framing layout, ceiling installation and openings affect how efficiently sheets can be used.
Screws and fixings
Fixing quantity depends on framing spacing, board thickness, number of layers and the installation specification. Follow the board-system manufacturer's fixing pattern rather than relying only on an area rate.
Tape and joint compound
Jointing materials are driven by joint length, corner treatment, number of coats and product coverage. Premixed and setting compounds may have different practical yields.

Plasterboard vs drywall
BuildCalc supports the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa. The geometry is universal, but terminology, units, pack sizes and common product dimensions differ. Use the dimensions printed on the product you intend to buy rather than assuming a regional default is exact.
The terminology changes by market, but the ordering principle is the same. Enter the actual sheet dimensions available from your supplier and check fire, moisture, acoustic and structural performance requirements separately.
