Linear quantity
For rails, battens and similar members, total linear requirement is the sum of member lengths. Convert this into available stock lengths and allow for cuts.
Stud walls
Stud count is driven by wall length and centre spacing, with extra members commonly required at ends, openings, corners and junctions.
Nominal vs actual
Some markets describe lumber by nominal sizes that differ from finished actual dimensions. Use actual dimensions for area and volume calculations.
Volume
Timber volume is cross-sectional area multiplied by length. This is useful for comparing quantities but does not determine structural capacity.

Regional differences
BuildCalc supports the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa. The geometry is universal, but terminology, units, pack sizes and common product dimensions differ. Use the dimensions printed on the product you intend to buy rather than assuming a regional default is exact.
Species, grades, treatment classes, structural grading and standard lengths differ. Quantity tools do not select the correct structural grade.
